Searching ….

Last week, me and Raphaela spent quite some time on a search for a decent sleeping mask. We somehow decided would have been fun to have one. So, we thought it would have been a piece of cake to find a nice one in London. I remembered I had seen really a nice one at Brighton’s Boots in September, so I had a pretty clear picture of what I was after.
Searching day one: nothing. We check almost every single Boots in central London, but so far so nothing.
Day two: Even less!
Day three: Nothing, but in one Boots, they ensured us we would get it at the bigger Boots, like the one at Piccadilly Circus. Ok, we said. Despite all the tiredness from a book-shopping:), we walked all the way from UCL to Piccadilly circus and indeed, there was a nice big Boots. Raphaela suggested we should have asked someone but I didn’t want to be disappointed too quickly so we decided to do a search: me one floor, and Raph the other. Hmmmm, no sleeping masks so far. So we decided to ask finally. The salesman:” I am sorry, but we ran out of sleeping masks at the moment”. Blimey!! Still nothing. Then on Regent Street, we entered some kind of beauty shop, just because we wanted to ask the hundred times repeated question:” Do you maybe have some sleeping masks?”
Salesperson: ” Yes, we do!”
Raphaela and Bojana, with most surprised expression on their faces:” Do you really?”
Salesperson, being quite surprised at us being so surprised: ” Sure! Would you like to try them on?”
Well, those sleeping masks were red and black, suitable for erotic games rather than for just nice sleep, which me and Raph had in mind:))
So we left the store, happier than before. At least we got to find one.
Then we promised we’d look up for it at the airports. I did found one, but really ugly boring one.
Hm, today, just by accident and googled it and find some really nice ones. But still no sings of sleeping masks that Carry & Co wear them in SATC. So, if anyone have an idea of where to find a nice decent cotton made sleeping mask, please help!

Tirol Girl

This lovely Tirol girl is no one else but my Spanish friend Rafael (from Bilbao), who loves to ‘monkey around’ as he puts is. I met him two years ago at Essex summer school in Social Science Data Analysis. We were class mates at Ethnographic course. We soon started to chat and became good friends for the time being in England and also afterwards.

He even came to visit last year early April. Rafa loved Slovenia, even before he came. He learnt loads of words, loads about the country itself . He had a special wish tho: to visit Piran, a place he knew only by internet. He told me that as a tiny boy, he read some comics and there was an imaginative place in there, quite similar to Piran.

National Holiday Today

Today, it is a national holiday day in Slovenia. It’s so called Preseren Day. As I already wrote about him, he was Slovenian greatest poet, born in 1800 and died 49 years later, on Thursday, February the 8th. I find it rather bizarre to have a national holiday on the anniversary of his death, would make much more sense to have it on the day of his birthday, which would be on December the 3rd. But since there are some speculations present among Slovenian genealogists about the exact date of his birth (family-tree shows the December 2nd), perhaps it was rather easier to choose the day of his death.

Franz Kurz von Goldenstein, 1850, oil on canvas

A Toast (which is also Slovenian national anthem)

The vintage, friends, is over,
And here sweet wine makes, once again,
Sad eyes and hearts recover,
Puts fire in every vein,
Drowns dull care
Everywhere
And summons hope out of despair.

To whom with acclamation
And song shall we our first toast give?
God save our land and nation
And all Slovenes where’er they live,
Who own the same
Blood and name,
And who one glorious Mother claim.

Let thunder out of heaven
Strike down and smite our wanton foe!
Now, as it once had thriven,
May our dear realm in freedom grow.
Let fall the last
Chains of the past
Which bind us still and hold us fast!

Let peace, glad conciliation,
Come back to us throughout the land!
Towards their destination

Let Slavs henceforth go hand-in-hand!
Thus again
Will honour reign
To justice pledged in our domain.

To you, our pride past measure,
Our girls! Your beauty, charm and grace!
here surely is no treasure
To equal maidens of such race.
Sons you’ll bear,
Who will dare
Defy our foe no matter where.

Our hope now, our to-morrow -
Our youth - we toast and toast with joy.
No poisonous blight or sorrow
Your love of homeland shall destroy.
With us indeed
You’re called to heed
Its summons in this hour of need.

God’s blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o’er earth’s habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

At last to our reunion -
To us the toast! Let it resound,
Since in this gay communion
By thoughts of brotherhood we’re bound.
May joyful cheer
Ne’er disappear
From all good hearts now gathered here.

No Title

I returned home from my skiing holiday, full of nice impressions and good intentions to write a nice post, with nice pictures. Then, first thing in the morning I checked Lisa’s blog for new parts of her story of How Lisa Came To Israel. I read, and I read and suddendly, I felt so stupid to write about skiing holiday. Skiing holiday? Trivial in comparison to what Lisa has to share. She is incredible, amazing, her story reads as if one was a part of it. She describes the arrival of a nice New Middle East after Oslo Accords. And then all of a sudden, boom, a second intifada, a new horror, the day of lynch, the beginning of a series of suicide bombings. Everything from a personal perspective of a girl, living in Tel Aviv.

So, today I won’t be posting about my skiing holiday, maybe tomorrow.

Just Some Cookies!

Yesterday I went home to visit my mum, before I go skiing. And of course, I had to look in on my two little nephews, too. The younger one, Jaka (seven months) had some sort of cold and poor baby was throwing up at the time of my visit. The older one, Zan (two years and 3 months) wasn’t even at home. I took my brother’s dog (which I love as it would be mine) for a walk and when I and Brix came back, Zan had just returned home as well.

A tiny voice coming out of the car: “Bojana, Bojana!” His mother let him out, he ran to me and I quickly took the opportunity to take this picture.

Then he said: “Bojana, Bojana, come on in, let’s go to my room!” I wanted a kiss first;) There are no words to describe a joy and happiness I am feeling when being around this little boy. We entered the house, he immediately turned the light on in the corridor, taking my winter jacket and a scarf off. Then I had to run after him into his new room (he had a smaller one before), he was being extremely proud of it. He sat down into his little chair, ready for me to take another picture of him.

But not for long! In the next second I had to follow him to the living room. He went to Jaka, gave him a kiss and asked: “Jaki, are you feeling any better?” Jaka had just fallen asleep so me and Zan went back to his room. We were reading his new book about Muri-cat a bit, then played with a jig-saw puzzle a bit, then we were singing a bit, and finally he went and sit in my mother’s lap. Before going home, I asked him what did he want me to get him from my trip. “A present”, he replayed. “What kind of present?” “Cookies!” What a modest child!Yeh, my little brother did a great job, having these two little chaps. Beside all the pleasure I get when I am around them, there is another good thing to it. My mum has her grandchildren, so she doesn’t give me any hassle for not having a kid yet.

What A Stunner!!

A user of Neowin found and published few pictures, on which Bill Gates posed like some kind of a top model for Teen Beat Photospread back in 1983.

Hmmmm, this handsome being one of the richest beasts in the world? He must have gotten very intimate with loads of his bosses, probably;)))

And thank you, Ian, for the title:)

How Nerdy Are You???

On this blog I found a funny test about how nerdy am I. And the results told me this:

“10% scored higher,
1% scored the same, and
90% scored lower.
What does this mean? Your nerdiness is:
Nerd King. Apply for a professorship at MIT now!!!”

I am nerdier than 90% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

Hmmmm, cool. But I don’t think those at MIT would gave me one:(((( Anyway, try the test out yourself, it’s a funny one:)))

Ljubljana On This Beautiful Day

Today, it appeared to be a wonderful day and I decided to take a walk down the city centre. To be honest, I wasn’t walking thru Ljubljana (even tho in live here) for ages. I always find myself being stucked here in Bezigrad (part of Ljubljana). But today I decided to make a change to it, and walked for about 20 minutes to get to city centre. Even tho I usually use my rollerblades to get around, I chose walking this time. So as I was strolling the streets I noticed that right after Christmas decoration (which of course I didn’t manage to see), Ljubljana is now full of sales signs. But I couldn’t have been bothered to walk into the stores, the sun was too nice. However, I decided to take a look into one specific store with mountaineering boots and … look look who I ran into. I met my dear friend Adela.

A nice view from a restaurant on the top of department store building. We wanted to stop here to eat something but we didn’t like it too much so we walked on. We passed Copova Street and Preseren Square to get to the old part of Ljubljana.

The square is called after Slovenia greatest poet France Preseren (1800-1849).

Sculpture of France Preseren, on Preseren Square above the Ljubljanica River. The sculpture has been erected facing the balcony of where his beloved Julija’s apartments were. She was a woman of higher social status whom he loved. She became, for many years, his muse and an object on unrequited love.

I couldn’t resist taking this picture of Preseren Square and Three Bridges. Then me and Adela sit down for lunch in a nice tavern, called Julija. Hmmmmm, one might think that it is named after Preseren’s Julija, but vis-a-vis there is a bar, called Romeo, so might have something to do with Shakespeare instead:))

After lunch we slowly head back home, and I liked the little shop with nice colourful things (tho I didn’t take a look inside).

It turned out to be a nice afternoon, spent with Adela. We always try to arrange meeting up but often fail cos either of us is too busy. We used to spend huge amounts of time together while we were students, and lately a bit less so. But our friendship remains the same, no matter how much time passes by before we meet each other. And that is what makes a real friendship beautiful.

P.S. I must admit tho, that for posting these pictures of Ljubljana, I was inspired by Lisa. She posted great pictures of Tel Aviv the other day.

Earthquaaake

I just talked to a friend who asked me if I had felt a slight earthquake at 9ish or so. Nope. I didn’t. I went to check on Slovenian Environmental Agency web sites and learned that actually two moderate earthquakes occurred at 8.58am and 9.05 am this morning. They hit by magnitude 4,1 for the first one and 3,8 for the second one. The centre was Cerkno, which lies on a western part of Slovenia and that’s why my friend felt it. She lives quite near by. Also some people in Ljubljana felt it but not Bojana:)).
Ljubljana has a serious history of earthquake’s hits. The first one took place back in 1511, and after that one Ljubljana needed to be partly rebuilt. Then, in 1895 a massive earthquake destroyed much of the city, razing most of it to the ground.
