Paris, je t’aime

Well, that’s just a tittle of the movie, advertised all over the Paris these days. Yesterday, I took a break from my furious writing as I thought I had deserved it and rewarded myself with petit trip to Paris.

Nana

I will let the photos speak for themselves and go back to my *writing*, as today, I am not even close to my 1000 words quota yet. And not going home until I am!

A bientôt;)

Mixed books?

My UCL supervisor (professor Benoit Rihoux) just left my office and I am laughing out loud.

mixed books

Benoit: So how do you manage that bunch of books there (pointing at what you see at the picture - which is half of my office desk)?
Bojana: Well, here are the books and articles on mixed methods (pointing at the upper left corner), here are the articles about online research methods (pointing middle left), here about data quality …

Benoit: No, no here are mixed books, not mixed methods!

Nothing so funny when reading this, but he said it with such tone of voice and such look that I couldn’t help myself but bursting into laughter.

The newest!

Yesterday, I think I gave the most awful presentation in my whole conference/seminar/workshops history. My English was extremely bad, my sentences quite fuzzy and the structure of the presentation unclear. Reason? Unknown, so far!

QCA
But I love how I managed to put so much on such small slide;))

… banana … London … the model … temperatures in Ljubljana … Depeche mode’s June concert … blisters on the feet … green pina colada tea … Jana’s wedding … online focus groups … USB air conditioning … the loo … contact lens … flight tomorrow … my mom … creative commons … May … pilates … white skirt … firefox upgrade … feedback-loop … virtual ethnography … morning run … Brix (a dog) … lip butter … diving suit … hair wash …

These are just some of the key words, which distracted my head in the last 10 minutes. No wonder I get so little work done!!!

Rules on my desk

For more disciplined writing, I wrote down some rules I am trying to follow more or less successfully:

Rule 1: Make writing a daily activity, whether feeling like it or not!!

Rule 2: Write on a regular basis (!), even if small amounts!

Rule 3: Organise writing tasks in terms of time and sequence!

Rule 4: Keep daily charts of: –> time spent for writing;

                                          –> pages written!

Rule 5: Send your work to people to receive much appreciated comments!

Rule 6: Writing is not to be subjected to weather conditions!

Rule 7: If you fail to follow these rules, bear in mind, that there are no exception to these rules!

Rule 8: “Easy cheesy” , “piece of cake” , “no problem” , “I can do it”, “I love it!” …… are the words to be used whenever you encounter with a writing blockage!

Anything else to be added?

Robbed

This morning I woke up from most awful dream. My laptop, mobile and wallet got stolen. Of course I was most worried about my PhD file on the laptop;)) Then, I remembered I got backups on external disk and on usb stick;) Not only with PhD file, but also with all EndNote references. I was happy! I didn’t mind being robbed at all anymore.

Bojana fighting Bojana

Brain: Wooo, groovy, I am so efficient, just keep on working!

Body: Oh, I can’t. Listen, what about heading off to ..

Brain: Shut up and sit here. All you have to do is sit, I am the one doing the real job, huh!

Body: Yes, but let me remind you, that if I decide to collapse, you won’t be doing any job … so let’s make a compromise and let’s call it a day.

Brain: You must be kidding! Tell me when did it go so well as yesterday and today? Let’s just insist a bit more …

Body: I haven’t came across anything as stubborn as you yet. Why don’t you simply get it that I bloody can’t sit here anymore. I case you didn’t know, there is another day tomor …

Brain: Lalalalalala, can’t hear you, lalalala

Giving birth to a PhD

is a difficult task. Much more difficult, as having a baby, according to these 11 reasons:

REASONS WHY WRITING A DISSERTATION IS HARDER THAN HAVING A BABY

1. Three months before your due date, your doctor doesn’t say, “I want you to go back and re-do the first trimester’s work.”

2. Unlike advisors, you can switch doctors without having to start over.

3. Conceiving a baby is WAY more fun than conceiving a topic.

4. You know exactly how long a pregnancy takes.

5. Friends and relatives don’t question the worth of a baby.

6. You don’t need to explain repeatedly to friends and family what it takes to make a baby and why you’re not through yet.

7. No one will make you go to grad. school before having a baby.

8. Everyone will say your baby is cute and you’ll believe them.

9. Babies don’t require proper footnoting or adherence to a style manual.

10. You can freely borrow other people’s stuff if you’re having a baby and not be accused of plagiarism.

11. No one will complain if your baby is too similar to another one.

But, then a friend, who already completed her PhD and also gave birth to a beautiful little girl, says having a baby is much harder than writing up the thesis.

So, what’s harder then? Huh, I still have to do both to find out;))
