Left Belgium

for London, where we had a thematic network meeting at LSE.

I would like to thank to all my friends at UCLouvain for very nice time I had in the past months among them; to Benoit for his intellectual input in my writing up, Anne-Sylvie to driving me back to Court-Saint-Etienne in the last two weeks, Caroline for a great farevell cake, Lieven for this nice t-shirt on comparative religions (see below;)), Airo for his tour around Leuven, and Regis, Pierre, Virginie, Ward, Gaelle and Guilia for dinner parties, nice chats and just being around. Merci beaucoup, cher amis! I can’t wait to greet you all in a few weeks time in Ljubljana.

A short guide to comparative religion

This is well worth reading;)

My favourite: Existentialism: What is shit anyway?

Paris, je t’aime

Well, that’s just a tittle of the movie, advertised all over the Paris these days. Yesterday, I took a break from my furious writing as I thought I had deserved it and rewarded myself with petit trip to Paris.

Nana

I will let the photos speak for themselves and go back to my *writing*, as today, I am not even close to my 1000 words quota yet. And not going home until I am!

A bientôt;)

Mixed books?

My UCL supervisor (professor Benoit Rihoux) just left my office and I am laughing out loud.

mixed books

Benoit: So how do you manage that bunch of books there (pointing at what you see at the picture - which is half of my office desk)?
Bojana: Well, here are the books and articles on mixed methods (pointing at the upper left corner), here are the articles about online research methods (pointing middle left), here about data quality …

Benoit: No, no here are mixed books, not mixed methods!

Nothing so funny when reading this, but he said it with such tone of voice and such look that I couldn’t help myself but bursting into laughter.

Flags + Statues = Leuven

Yesterday, I finally visited a father (or perhaps a mother) of Louvain-la-Neuve, the Flemish old Leuven. I was told many times, that the city it’s all worth visiting, mostly for its university, which happens to be the oldest university in Belgium and the university which UCLouvain emerged out from. And I was impressed, it is all true. Tho, nobady told me a very important little detail - that the town is full of flags and statues.

Leuven

Tho a comparative case of Louvain-la-Neuve statues and Leuven statues (with pictures;) is yet to be made, here is a lady which you can chat up at the Old Market, also known as the largest bar in the world (above picture).

Flags all over, on every single corner … I was told nobady really knows the meaning of all the flags.

And this is the building that took my breathe away - University Library.

Also visited a great beguinage, which was a form of female monastery.

beguinage

Airo told me mostly PhD students and visiting professors are living in these buildings. Amazing place to be and study.

So, in short, Leuven is, much like Oxford and Cambridge, a complete academic turn on!

Trip to Den Haag

Then, at the end of the first week, I had a conference in Den Haag, giving a paper at the workshop Methodology Matters. I love the format of it, as we had to send papers beforehand, and at the workshop, we presented them in 15 minutes. Lovely! Because almost an hour was then dedicated to the discussion about each paper, starting off with a discussant’s comments followed by the comments from the rest of the participants. Most effective! I got great comments.

We

After the conference, Saki, Benoit, Airo and I went for a stroll thru the city and ran into queen herself;)) N/K!!

Back to Belgium

Obviously, that’s not a piece of news anymore either, as I’ve been here for more than three weeks now. On the first weekend, I went to visit Atomuim and even tho it might give a taste of a very tourist cliché, I loved it! I especially loved the furniture in there. Great beds, in big balls hanging down from the wall, nice chairs, excellent view. Definitely a must see!

. . .

I don’t have a real title to this post, as it really is not going to be a post. It’s just reminding myself, how to post, so I would post sometime soon as I didn’t post for ages!

In the meantime, three important things happened:

  1. Jana got married!
  2. My blog was temporary unavailable as the server that hosted him died (Hvala, Skrat, za hitro in nesebicno ukrepanje, tvoj blog je se zmer down, tko da hurry up;)).
  3. I am back to Belgium and LLN.

Pictures, impressions, and of course real posts are to follow.
